Original Soviet Naval Border Guard Ensign — Excellent ConditionOffered is an original Soviet Union Naval Border Guard Ensign, used by the maritime units of the Soviet Border Troops (Пограничные войска СССР).
This is a genuine Soviet-era military/maritime flag, not a modern reproduction. The green field identifies the Border Guard service, while the canton incorporates the distinctive Soviet naval ensign with the red star and hammer-and-sickle emblem. Soviet Border Guard naval ensigns of this basic design were used by Border Guard vessels during the Soviet period.
The maritime units of the Soviet Border Troops were responsible for protecting the USSR's extensive maritime borders and operated patrol vessels and other watercraft. From 1957, the Border Troops were part of the Soviet security structure that became the KGB in 1978, which is why these flags are frequently encountered by collectors under the terms Soviet Border Guard, KGB Border Guard, or KGB naval flag.

This is a Soviet GOST technical standard associated with special marine flags. The marking is clearly visible in the accompanying close-up photograph.
ConditionExcellent original condition.
This flag is unusually clean and well preserved for a Soviet military ensign of this type. The colors remain strong and there are no obvious moth holes, tears, major stains or significant damage visible.
Material: The flag is constructed from a fine, tightly woven textile. The exact fiber content is unknown; I am not representing it as wool, linen, or cotton without documentation.
The flag does have normal folds and creases from long-term storage. Based on its overall condition, it appears to have seen little or possibly no actual service. I cannot document that it was officially unissued, however, so I am describing it conservatively as an original flag in excellent condition.
I purchased this flag from a collector approximately 27 years ago and have kept it in my own collection since that time.
DatingThe exact year of manufacture is not known. The ГОСТ 8498-81 marking identifies the Soviet manufacturing standard rather than proving a specific year of manufacture. The flag is consistent with the late Soviet/Cold War period.
