The art of Navajo silversmithing began when Navajo people learned the craft from Mexican plateros (silversmiths) during periods of captivity and trade in the mid-1800s. Initially, tools were basic—using files, punches, and even horseshoe nails—but the craft evolved with the introduction of coin silver and later sterling silver. Rings, along with bracelets and belts, became popular trade items and personal adornments.
