This is a classic Automatic Electric Style 80 (or similar mid-century desk model) rotary telephone, cast in a rich forest green color. Automatic Electric (AE) was a major competitor to Western Electric and manufactured heavy-duty, high-quality telephones primarily for independent telephone operating companies across the United States.
Key Design & Historical FeaturesThe Stance and Shell: The Model 80 series was introduced in the mid-1950s as Automatic Electric's direct answer to Western Electric’s iconic Model 500 desk set. It features a sleek, contoured thermoplastic housing and a matching coiled handset cord.
The Rotary Dial: The phone utilizes a standard rotary finger wheel with traditional letter-and-number associations (e.g., 2 for ABC, 3 for DEF), which were used for the old two-letter, five-number exchange naming system popular through the 1960s.
The Cradle Branding: Looking closely at the handset cradle area between the forks, you can see the embossed Automatic Electric corporate logo and maker markings. AE was famously affiliated with GTE (General Telephone & Electronics) during much of its later production era.
