Vintage Gilbert Tambour Clock with 40 Hour Movement (Cleaned and Runs Well):
$49.00
This vintage Gilbert Tambour Clock is a charming addition to any room. With a mechanical movement and a 40-hour feature, it is a reliable and practical choice for a mantel clock. The clock is made of wood, brass, and glass, with a Mahogany finish and an Americana style. The clock is an original, manufactured in the early 20th century (1911-1940) in the United States. It has a Tambour shape and display type, with an analog dial and a spring power source. The clock is cleaned and runs well, making it a great decorative collectible for any vintage clock enthusiast. When I purchased the clock it was in decent shape but did not run. The clock was obviously run for a long time and the movement showed severe wear but all components were there. I believe the clock was manufactured around 1930 based on similar Gilbert clocks I have seen (I can not find a match for the clock in any of the Gilbert pricing guides). The mainspring was good so I left it alone. Many of the pivot holes were well worn, and this was what stopped the clock from running. I re-bushed a lot of pivot holes, cleaned and polished the pivots, and gave the movement a good cleaning, reassembled, oiled, and put in beat. The clock now runs accurately. It does take a little giggle to get it going if it has stopped, but once running it keeps going just fine.
The bezel around the face had a dent at the 7. I was able to push out most of the dent but it is still visible (see pictures). The clock dial, glass, and hands are in great shape and look really nice.
The case is showing its age. Lots of small dents and scratches but not too bad. There is a gash/scratch in the painted area on the right. I was able to fill the scratch with gold gilders wax to match the paint but it was too deep to repair completely. The finish is in OK shape for its age. I was going to refinish the case, but I decided to leave as original and just polish with feed-and-wax. The polishing brought but the original color nicely. The back plate was badly scratched, so I covered in shiny black enamel paint, and it looks good (please see pictures).
