Washi & Wish StudioTraditional Japanese Paper WishesVintage Japanese Goshuincho — Chūson-ji Temple, Hiraizumi, 1971Accordion Stamp Book with a Chūson-ji Goshuin, Kon Tōkō Calligraphy and 10 Showa-Era Travel StampsChūson-ji (中尊寺), Hiraizumi, Iwate — visited August 5, 1971 (Showa 46)A genuine pilgrimage record from 1971 — the goshuin was brush-written and hand-stamped at Chūson-ji on the day of the visit. Photographed as the exact item you will receive, not a reproduction.ABOUT THIS PIECEChūson-ji (中尊寺) in Hiraizumi, Iwate is the head temple of the Tendai school in northern Japan and home to the Konjikidō (金色堂), the famous Golden Hall built in the 12th century. Hiraizumi is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This goshuincho is an accordion-fold stamp book with an orange cloth cover, a title label reading 旅情 (Ryojō, “the feeling of travel”), and a gold-printed floral roundel. The first page carries the calligraphy 金色霊廟 (“Golden Mausoleum,” referring to the Konjikidō), printed with the signature and seal of Kon Tōkō (今東光, 1898–1977) — the well-known novelist and Tendai priest who served as chief abbot of Chūson-ji from 1966 until his death. The book appears to be one sold at the temple during his tenure.Opposite it is the goshuin of Chūson-ji, brush-written with 関山 中尊寺 (Kanzan Chūson-ji, the temple’s formal name) and the date 奉拝 昭和四十六年八月五日 — “respectfully visited, August 5, Showa 46 (1971)” — with the temple’s red seals. The following pages hold 10 commemorative travel stamps collected on the same trip, several dated 46.8.5: Chūson-ji and the Konjikidō, the Hiraizumi Cultural History Museum, Mōtsū-ji temple, and three stamps from Ryūsendō, one of Japan’s great limestone caves in Iwaizumi, Iwate.A small time capsule of a summer journey through Tōhoku more than fifty years ago. All remaining pages are blank and can still be used for your own goshuin collection. Also included is the original printed leaflet from Chūson-ji, 勅印のいわれ (“The Origin of the Imperial Seal”), which explains the history behind the temple’s seal.DETAILSSizeH 185 mm × W 120 mm × D 15 mm (7.28 × 4.72 × 0.59 inches)Contents1 goshuin from Chūson-ji (dated August 5, 1971), 10 commemorative travel stamps, and printed calligraphy by Kon Tōkō on the first page; all other pages blank.
