Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible matching pair of vintage 1948 Southwestern mini pottery bowls. Purchased as souvenirs at the Grand Canyon nearly 80 years ago, both pieces feature the exact same hand-etched inscription on their unglazed bases: "GRAND CANYON 1948".
These pieces are classic examples of mid-century Native American "poster paint" (or showcard) tourist pottery, a historic tradition popularized by artists from the Tesuque and Jemez Pueblos. Created specifically for the booming post-WWII travel market and historic gift shops like the Fred Harvey Hopi House, it is incredibly rare to find an intact matching pair that has remained together for decades.
