The Infrastructure: Established as a station on the Oregon Trunk Railroad in 1911, Mecca by 1917 featured a train depot, several residential houses, a water tower, a general store, a post office, and a bridge crossing the Deschutes River.
The Mecca Grade: The town served as a vital freight link for the region. Teams of wagons used a steep, narrow, and winding three-mile route known as the Mecca Grade to haul agricultural supplies and people between the canyon-bottom railroad station and the farming homesteads up on the Agency Plains.
The Name: The town earned its name because it sat at the exact point where the arduous, steep railroad construction through the treacherous lower Deschutes Canyon finally eased up. To the early railroad crews, arriving at this flat area felt like reaching a promised land, or a "Mecca".
