The Cross is an early Crankshaw-produced example dating to approximately the 1900–1904 period, before production transferred to Whitehead & Hoag.
The obverse features the Confederate battle flag within a laurel wreath and the inscription“UNITED DAUGHTERS CONFEDERACY TO THE U.C.V.”The reverse bears the Southern Cross of Honor inscription surrounding the dates1861–1865and the motto“DEO VINDICE.”
This example isunengraved and unattributed; there is no veteran's name on the suspension bar.
Condition is very good for its age. The Cross retains an attractive, even aged bronze/brown patina with strong lettering and design detail. The suspension ring, bar, long pin, hinge and catch are present. There is minor age-related surface wear and a very small area of verdigris on the suspension bar. The piece hasnot been polished or cleaned.
