ROBERT H. MORRIS SIGNED CUT AUTOGRAPH NEW YORK CITY 64TH MAYOR POSTMASTER 1840S:
$249.99
original, authentic clipped signature of Robert H. Morris, a prominent political figure in mid-19th-century New York. Morris served three consecutive terms as the Mayor of New York City from 1841 to 1844.
Beyond his mayoral duties, Morris holds a legendary status in U.S. Postal History. In 1845, while serving as the Postmaster of New York City, Morris issued the "New York Postmaster's Provisional"—a 5-cent adhesive stamp. Because the federal government had not yet begun issuing national postage stamps, Morris took the progressive initiative to create his own local stamps for the prepayment of mail. This makes his signature a fantastic crossover collectible for both political historians and philatelists!
