Up for sale is an exceptional, authentic early 20th-century studio photograph depicting a deep-sea diver in vintage Russian Imperial Navy gear. This is a genuine period-correct analog print on heavy, double-weight photographic paper, not a modern digital reproduction or restrike. The photograph provides incredible, razor-sharp details of historical diving technology from 1912. The subject is shown wearing a classic Russian 12-bolt configuration diving dress, clearly displaying the prominent arrangement of securing studs and a rugged, textured cast-iron chest weight held securely by thick natural fiber ropes. Notably, the oval manufacturer's identification tag on the breastplate is incredibly clear, and the historical European patent stamp "DEP." (Déposé) is sharply visible stamped directly into the metal just below the collar ring. Unlike the stiff, stern expressions common in military portraits of this era, this diver is captured with a rare, engaging smile, giving the piece immense cross-market appeal for both maritime collectors and enthusiasts of early industrial photography.Condition Report:
The photo paper is in excellent antique condition with superb tonal contrast, rich blacks, and clean highlights. The print features a beautiful, subdued textured studio finish on heavy double-weight paper. The print has been historically hand-trimmed into an elegant oval shape, a practice common for custom frames or window-mat military presentation albums of the period. The back of the photo is exceptionally clean, crisp, and free of pencil marks, tape, or glue/paper residue. A single, minor rust-colored external contact transfer mark is present near the top edge of the reverse side (likely from historic storage alongside a metal clip or staple over the past century). This is confined entirely to the blank reverse and does not affect the front imagery in any way.Dimensions:
