【 Item Description 】

Exceptional large surviving group of Dixon’s Operators Pencil No. 300 pencils by the Joseph Dixon Crucible Co., Jersey City, New Jersey, preserved with their original Six Dozen factory packaging.

These specialized pencils were produced as industrial writing tools for early telegraph operators, railroad dispatchers, switchboard operators, and other communications professionals who needed to write quickly and continuously while recording messages and operational information.

The Operators No. 300 was designed with a large, very soft graphite core capable of producing a dark, bold line with minimal writing pressure. The pencils are ferrule-less and eraser-less, reflecting their utilitarian professional design.

The model is documented in early 20th-century Dixon catalogs, including examples dating to approximately 1910, while the green-and-cream packaging style seen here is characteristic of approximately the 1930s–1950s period.

Brand: Dixon / Joseph Dixon Crucible Co.
Model: Operators Pencil No. 300
Marked: Dixon’s Operators Pencil 300
Made in: U.S.A.
Original Factory Quantity: Six Dozen / 72 pencils
Actual Quantity Included: 70 pencils
Missing: 2 pencils from the original 72

The lot includes:

  • 70 Dixon’s Operators No. 300 pencils
  • Original Six Dozen outer factory box
  • Original green DIXON OPERATOR PENCILS inner wrappers / sleeves
  • Original packaging marked 300 and Six Dozen

The pencils feature dark round wood barrels with gold lettering, no erasers, no metal ferrules, and exposed large graphite cores visible at the unsharpened ends.

This is a highly appealing survivor for collectors of vintage pencils, telegraph equipment, railroad memorabilia, communications history, industrial writing tools, office antiques, and early American stationery.

【 Condition Report 】

Very good vintage old-stock condition overall for the pencils.

70 of the original 72 pencils are present.

Most of the pencils appear unused and unsharpened, with normal age-related surface wear, minor finish variation, light rubbing, and storage marks from many decades in the original packaging.

The original paper and cardboard packaging shows substantial age and storage wear, including:

  • Tears and missing paper areas
  • Edge and corner wear
  • Creasing
  • Discoloration
  • Surface loss
  • Old tape reinforcement
  • General fragility from age

The outer box is worn but remains extremely important to the historical and collectible value of the set.

The original green inner wrappers are also present and show age-related tearing and wear.

This is a near-complete original six-dozen factory assortment, missing only two pencils.

Please review all photos carefully for the exact condition of the pencils, wrappers, and original outer box.

【 A Personal Note from the Seller 】

This is much more than a simple lot of vintage pencils.

The Dixon’s Operators No. 300 was a purpose-built professional writing instrument associated with the era of telegraphy, railroad dispatching, switchboards, and rapid communications work. Its large soft graphite core and simple ferrule-less construction were designed for fast, dark, continuous writing.

What makes this particular group especially special is the survival of 70 of the original 72 pencils together with the original Six Dozen factory carton and internal Dixon wrappers.

Individual vintage Dixon pencils can still be found, but surviving near-complete factory quantities with original period packaging are significantly harder to encounter.

For a collector of vintage writing instruments, communications history, railroad material, industrial design, or early American office equipment, this is an unusually complete and visually impressive group.

【 Shipping & Handling 】

The pencils and original packaging will be packed with special care.

Because the vintage cardboard and paper packaging is fragile, the entire group will be supported and protected to help prevent additional crushing, tearing, or movement during shipment.

We combine shipping whenever practical. Please feel free to contact us with any questions before purchasing.
