Bell System wiping solder is a specialized, highly malleable tin-lead alloy (typically 38% Tin and 62% Lead) historically used by telephone and utility companies. It was primarily designed to manually seal the massive lead sleeves covering underground and aerial telecommunication splices, as well as lead water plumbing joints. - How it Works: Unlike modern electronic solder that instantly flows or solidifies, wiping solder has a wide plastic "pasty" range (melting between 183°C and 238°C / 361°F and 460°F).
