Ira C. Eaker signed this typed letter in 1976, saying "I heard early in life that only the good die young. So, I have spent the intervening years making certain that I did not get an early call on that account." He died 11 years after signing this letter, at the ripe old age of 91.
TLS: "Ira C. Eaker", 1¼p, 7¼x10½. Washington, D.C., 1976 April 23. To Robert F. Allen, Jr., Lewiston, Maine, telling him "the secret to my longevity". The Four-Star General was 91 when he died 11 years after writing this letter. In part: "I heard early in life that only the good die young. So, I have spent the intervening years making certain that I did not get an early call on that account. Somewhat later, I read that no man dies until his work is finished. I have, therefore, kept busy trying to leave the general impression that my work is not yet finished...." In WWII, Eaker was Commanding General of all U.S. Army Air Forces in the United Kingdom and Air Commander in Chief of the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces. He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1970 "for outstanding contributions to aviation by his demonstrations of new flight techniques and devotion to developing and leading air forces that brought victory in World War II". Horizontal fold touches signature. Fine condition.
