The natural color layer of bismuth is soluble in various acids. So, to preserve the color of your crystals, avoid contact with acidic liquids e.g., lemon juice, vinegar, etc. Also, over-handling can affect the color of bismuth but normal handling is fine.

As with many mineral specimens bismuth can have sharp edges and should be handled carefully. It should be kept out of reach of young children.
