Up for sale is a beautiful and highly collectible original Victorian ladies' dress glove box, dating from the mid-to-late 19th century. Crafted from a lightweight wood base and finished with a rich black asphaltum-style lacquer, this box beautifully mirrors the highly fashionable papier-mâché look of the era.The lid features a striking, shaped scalloped silhouette adorned with a hand-painted central floral bouquet of roses. The outer rim of the lid is elegantly detailed with shimmering, hand-cut mother-of-pearl/abalone shell flakes that catch the light beautifully. The front panel repeats the delicate hand-painted floral motif. Open the box to reveal its rarest feature: the original variegated gold and silver foil paper lining. The lining boasts an authentic Victorian pattern of alternating metallic stripes and splotched/stamped designs. Additionally, the box comes complete with its original antique loop key resting in the front integrated lock.

Condition Report: This item is in very good antique condition for its age (well over 150 years old), displaying beautiful, authentic character:Exterior: The painted florals remain clear with some wear. There is expected, age-appropriate craquelure to the lacquer finish, with minor scuffs, flecks, and light edge wear revealing the underlying wood structure as shown in photos. The mother-of-pearl inlay is largely intact and highly iridescent.Interior: The original metallic paper lining is remarkably well-preserved with typical minor discoloration, fading, and wear consistent with age and gentle use.Hardware: Original period hinges and lock mechanism are present.
