An exceptional antique French mechanical carriage alarm clock retailed by Tiffany & Co., dating to approximately the turn of the 20th century.

This handsome and remarkably compact timepiece represents the elegant tradition of French carriage clocks retailed by Tiffany & Co. during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It combines an architectural brass case, beveled glass panels, exposed mechanical movement, subsidiary alarm dial and the unmistakable Tiffany & Co. name.

The white dial is prominently signed:

The principal dial features bold black Roman numerals, an outer minute track and traditional black hands.

Directly beneath the main timekeeping dial is a separate 1–12 subsidiary alarm-setting dial, giving this diminutive carriage clock an additional mechanical complication and wonderful visual character.

CASE & DESIGN

The clock is housed in a beautifully proportioned architectural brass carriage case.

Classically styled fluted corner columns rise between the stepped upper and lower galleries, while an articulated folding brass handle completes the traditional traveling-clock form.

Beveled glass panels provide views into the clock from multiple sides, while the glazed rear door opens to reveal the mechanical movement and its winding and setting mechanisms.

A beveled glass viewing panel at the top provides another fascinating perspective into the mechanical workings.

The brass retains a warm, naturally aged patina with surface wear, oxidation and tonal variation appropriate for an antique timepiece more than a century old.

It has not been aggressively polished, allowing the clock to retain the character and visual presence acquired through age.
