RARE Double-Sided Antique A.O.H. Ribbon Badge — Division No. 27, Olyphant, PA — Festive & "In Memoriam" Reverse, Near-Perfect Condition

A genuine dual-purpose ribbon badge of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (A.O.H.), Division No. 27, Olyphant, Pennsylvania — a former anthracite coal-mining town in Lackawanna County with a substantial Irish immigrant community. The Ancient Order of Hibernians is an Irish Catholic fraternal and benevolent society founded in the U.S. in 1836; its motto, "Friendship, Unity, and True Christian Charity," appears directly on the front medallion.

This ribbon was constructed to serve two purposes: the celebratory green/patriotic face for parades and regular lodge occasions, and the black "In Memoriam" reverse for wear at a fellow member's funeral — a documented period practice for fraternal organizations of this era. A closely comparable two-sided AOH ribbon (festive obverse, "In Memoriam" reverse, same division format) is held in a U.S. historical society collection, confirming this dual-face construction as authentic period practice rather than an alteration.

Surviving double-sided examples with both faces intact and undamaged are notably scarcer than single-sided festive ribbons alone — the black mourning silk in particular is prone to fading and wear, and paired ribbons are frequently separated or damaged over time. This example survives in exceptional condition on both faces.

  • Front (festive side): clasped-hands friendship emblem on enamel top bar, blue ribbon ground; crossed American flags on white satin panel; gilt-and-enamel medallion reading "UNITY · TRUE CHRISTIAN CHARITY · FRIENDSHIP · U.S.A." with A.O.H. shield-and-crown crest; green satin body reading "DIVISION NO. 27 · A.O.H. · OLYPHANT · PENNA."
  • Reverse (mourning side): "IN MEMORIAM" in gothic lettering; silver cross within a sunburst roundel; ornate "A.O.H." gothic monogram flanking a fern/palm frond motif; black satin body reading "DIVISION NO. 27 · A.O.H. · OLYPHANT · PENNA."
  • Full metallic bullion fringe at top and bottom, both sides
