Antique German Hirschfänger / Jagdhirschfänger Hunting Sword – Circa 1900

Offered is an attractive antique German Hirschfänger (hunting sword/hanger), believed to date from approximately 1890–1910.

This substantial example features a 21.5-inch straight steel blade, natural stag-horn grip decorated with three applied brass acorns, and an ornate brass hunting-themed hilt. The crossguard is formed as opposing sculpted deer legs terminating in cloven hooves, accompanied by a large fluted shell-form guard.

The ricasso is stamped “21,” which appears to be an assembly or fitting number. No definitive manufacturer’s trademark has been identified. Similar period Hirschfänger were manufactured by several prominent Solingen firms, but this example is being sold as maker unknown.

The sword shows considerable age and patina. The blade has surface oxidation, discoloration and areas of rust, as clearly shown in the photographs. The brass fittings retain an attractive aged patina, and the stag-horn grip shows expected age and wear. A green felt blade washer remains at the guard.
