Antique German stoneware beer stein with original pewter hinged lid, circa 1890–1910.
Capacity: 1/4 liter (0.25 L) — marked “1/4 L” on the rim beneath the lid.Cream-colored body with colorful relief decoration: wooden beer barrel in the center, red flowers and blue clover-style foliage, black banner with the German proverb:
“Ein Glas beim Freund Ist gut gemeint.”
(A glass with a friend is well meant.)
Red beaded bands, black rim band, and cream handle. Conical pewter lid with decorative acanthus/leaf thumb lift. Impressed on the unglazed base: 1256 II.This model corresponds to Adolf Diesinger catalog No. 1256 (“Beer Barrel and Saying”), produced in the Westerwald region of Germany.Approximate measurements (see photos):
• Height with lid: about 8½–9 inches
• Body diameter: roughly 3¼–3½ inchesCondition: Great condition for its age. Pewter lid and hinge intact and functional. Glaze chips and losses along the foot rim/base edge (see photos). Some age staining on the unglazed bottom. No cracks or repairs visible.
