Dating precisely to the 1890s, this original studio portrait was taken by the photographer Koestle at his studio located at 845 Lorain St., Cleveland, Ohio.
The photograph captures a stunning scene of a young child outfitted in elite, wealthy late-19th-century winter attire—most notably a heavy double-breasted tweed coat, a large velvet hat tied with a silk ribbon bow, and a voluminous plush fur shoulder capelet. Posed beautifully atop an ornate stone balustrade architectural pillar right next to the child is their loyal, dark curly-coated Cocker Spaniel mix dog. The dog is handsomely outfitted with a thick, visible collar band and is captured with razor-sharp focal clarity throughout the texture of its fur.
The bottom margin retains the photographer's elaborate, highly artistic burgundy ink signature and logo block reading: "Koestle ~ 845 Lorain St., Cleveland".
