Dating to the 1880s or 1890s, this historic studio portrait was taken by the photographer Rogers at his studio located at 804 Main St., Lynchburg, Virginia.
The photograph captures a compelling, multi-dog scene: a young boy wearing spectacles and a traditional heavy buttoned Victorian overcoat cradles a small puppy in his lap. Posed proudly next to him on a studio rock prop is a second, highly trained terrier-type dog performing a "begging" or "praying" trick on command. The dog is sitting perfectly upright on its hindquarters with its front paws crossed over its chest, wearing a thick studded leather collar with a heavy metal chain trailing to the floor.
