We have just received an extensive estate collection ofantique Catholic medals from a Jesuit priest whose hobby was metal detectingaround the area of the Great Lakes. This medal is French in origin and datesfrom the period of the French Missions in what is now Canada. The image is of aFrench Black Madonna with Infant Jesus and the Holy Spirit above. On theobverse is Jesus on a cross surrounded by the Roman torture instruments usedduring his Crucifixion. The medal is 1.75 inches long (not counting the bale)and weighs 15 grams of bronze. According to the inventory notes, this medal wasfound with a group of similar medals and may have been carried for trade or asgifts for the original inhabitants of North America. We have only a few ofthese specimens. Each will be listed individually after its prior companionsells. They will not be sold together to give all our supporters an opportunityto be their next caretaker.
This medals dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 ofthe book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published byNUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004.In addition, this book has chapters (outlinedin the table of contents), describing each of the categories of medals, theirpossible place of pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of the mint where theywere made. We recommend that anyone serious about collecting medals from this periodacquire a copy of this book.
