Augustine of Hippo, (13 November 354 -- 28 August 430),also known as Saint Augustine, was a theologian, philosopher, and the bishop ofHippo Regius in Numidia, Roman North Africa. His writings influenced thedevelopment of Western philosophy and Western Christianity, and he is viewed asone of the most important Church Fathers of the Latin Church in the PatristicPeriod. His many important works include The City of God, On ChristianDoctrine, and Confessions.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the CatholicCounter-Reformation reshaped Europe and expanded into the Americas toevangelize native peoples. Bronze medals were a significant but common objectminted during this period. Each medal tells a unique story because they aresourced from Catholic convents, estate collections, and metal detectorenthusiasts. Due to their use, being touched hundreds or thousands of times,and often being carried and worn in harsh environments, the medals will showthe natural surface wear (patina) created by their age, use in devotion, and byexposure to the elements. They are found in modern days both aboveground insometimes buried, as with other artifacts.
