Antique China Peking Baoyunlou 100 Postcards Complete Boxed Set Chinese Painting:
$799.99
Rare Complete Boxed Set of 100 Chinese Art PostcardsOffered here is acomplete boxed set of 100 Chinese art postcards / photographic reproductions of historic paintings associated with the Baoyunlou collection in Peking (Peiping/Beiping), China.
The original fabric-covered presentation box bears the Chinese title:
Baoyunlou Minghua Yingpian Baizhong
Approximately translated as:
“One Hundred Photographic Reproductions of Famous Paintings from Baoyunlou.”
The set contains:
- All 100 original art cards
- Original fabric-covered fitted presentation box
- Separate handwritten provenance/history note
The cards reproduce traditional Chinese paintings and appear to have been issued by thePeiping/Beiping Antiquities Exhibition Office (古物陳列所).
Based on the Peiping/Beiping terminology and the known period during which this organization operated, the set appears to be aRepublican-era Chinese publication, likely dating to the prewar period, approximately the late 1920s through 1930s.
The exact publication year has not been independently established, so the dating should be considered approximate.
HANDWRITTEN ENGLISH ANNOTATIONSA particularly unusual feature of this set is thatall 100 cards have extensive handwritten English information on the reverse.
The handwriting appears consistent throughout the set and also appears similar to the handwriting on the accompanying loose note.
The annotations identify or discuss subjects including:
- Artists
- Chinese dynasties
- Painting subjects
- Historical figures
- Individual scenes
- Artist dates
- Art-historical information
The writer uses older transliterations and terminology, including Wade-Giles-style spellings such as:
Su Tung Po / Su Shih
Tung Ch'i-ch'ang
Chang Jo-ai
Sung
Yüan
Ch'ing
These annotations appear to have been added by a previous collector or owner rather than being part of the original printed cards.
The identity of the writer and the date the annotations were made are unknown.
ACCOMPANYING PROVENANCE NOTEAlso included is a separate handwritten note which appears to be in the same hand as the card annotations.
The note reads:
“From the Peking Palace Collection before its dispersal.”
This note is included with the set as found.
The statement hasnot been independently authenticated, and I am therefore offering it strictly as historical collector provenance/context rather than as documented proof that the cards themselves were removed directly from the Imperial Palace Collection.
Potential buyers should evaluate the note and its significance for themselves.
CONDITION DETAILSThe set iscomplete with all 100 cards present.
