Towed by heavy sea going tugs these heavily laden coal barges are breaking their way through the floating ice in New York harbor to bring their sorely needed cargoes of fuel to the city. For the first time in years the harbor was almost solidly frozen over and shipping to a great extent was tied up. The situation was so bad that calls were sent to the Navy to rush ice breakers to the port to keep the channel open to shipping. The ice in the harbor added to the fuel faming too, for in many cases it prevented and in all others hindered the shipment of coal from the railroad terminals on the Jersey shore to the coal yards in New York. These barges were among the fortunate few that managed to break through the floating ice to help relieve the fuel famine in New York City.Photo measures 10 x 8inches. Photo is dated 01-07-1918.
