Phra Somkor
11 hermits created Phra Somkor in the era ofKing Phra Mahathammaracha litai, the 5th king of Sukhothai. It was first discoveredon B.E. 2392 (A.D.1849) in Wat Phra Borom that, Kamphaeng Phet province. PhraSomkor is the most famous among the Kamphaeng Phet province amulets. KamphaengPhet province is also known as the “Millionaire Field” (Thung Setthi). Theamulets were typically made of red baked clay with a thumbnail shape andstraight base. Many Phra Somkor amulets were made and kept in the Chedi aroundthe Thung Setthi fields in Kamphaeng Phet Province at the time. They werecreated with materials like baked clay, Liliaceae fiber/sap, tin, lead, thingold sheets and soil and calcium. The Baked clay amulet is the most popularvariant made from pure soil. It does not contain any sand or rock, however, ithas some mixture of silver and gold powder. Brownish red Liliaceae elixir wassprinkled on the amulet to preserve the skin. The amulet texture is smooth andthe layer of elixir cannot be removed. After the hermits had created andblessed the amulets, they were kept in the Chedi for over 600 years to preserveBuddhism.
Kamphaeng Phet province ancient amulets wereonly discovered when Somdej Phra Puttacharn Toh Prommarangsi from Wat RakhangKositaram went there to visit his relatives and saw a stone inscription on apagoda. After that, Wat Borom was recognized, and Kamphaeng Phet amulets werediscovered there. Subsequently, when the temple was demolished forreconstruction, more amulets were found.
Phra Somkor is part of the grand fiveBenjapakee set. The beautiful art on Phra Somkor amulets are marvelous and isthe last piece to make up the Grand five amulets. There is a famous slogan forPhra Somkor amulets, “if you have me, you will never get poor.”
