Not to slag Renee (I’ve always had a weird crush on her), but as far as I’m concerned most Hollywood Prius owners who buy bottled water are huge eco-posers, especially if they live in an area where the tap water is perfectly fine.

While it’s true that some electricity is consumed maintaining public water pressure, that’s nothing compared to the amount of fossil fuels consumed in the bottled water business. Fuel is burned hauling the water to the bottling plant, and hauling the bottles to the bottling plant. More fossil fuels are likely burned providing electricity for the plant. And even more fossil fuels are burned transporting the bottled water from the plant to the store. Not to mention the oil consumed in making the actual bottles. And then assuming the bottles get recycled (and not all do), then more fuel is burned getting the bottles to the sorting plant, and then to the recycling plant. Where even more fossil fuels are burned providing power to the recycling plant (As great as recycling is, it isn’t an environmentally neutral process. It’s just better than dumping the stuff in a land fill).

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big conservationist. But the Hollywood celebs who fly around in private planes, live in big air-conditioned mansions, while trying to pretend they are environmentally conscious by driving a prius just piss me off.

DJL, I live in So Cal and I go up to L.A all the time. The water here is not fit for consumption. I don’t know ANYONE that drinks tap water here; EVERYONE here drinks filtered or bottled water. Sure drinking bottled may not be the most environmentally friendly thing but we all do the best we can. No one can be 100 percent earth-friendly all the time. Even a little bit (just driving a Prius) helps, even if you aren’t green ALL the time.
